The French banking market offers dozens of investment options, ranging from traditional banks, online banks, to specialized brokers. Fees, available wrappers (PEA, life insurance, securities account), and guarantees in case of default vary significantly from one institution to another. Choosing a bank for investment is not just about comparing a rate or a promotional offer: the decision impacts the portfolio’s taxation, the future mobility of assets, and the actual protection of savings.

Deposit Guarantee and Securities Guarantee: Two Distinct Protections

A point rarely highlighted in banking comparisons concerns the very nature of the protection afforded to the saver. The protection of deposits and that of securities fall under two separate mechanisms. Traditional bank deposits (current accounts, savings accounts) are covered by the Deposit Guarantee and Resolution Fund (FGDR).

Securities held in a PEA or a securities account, on the other hand, fall under a distinct guarantee that only comes into play if the intermediary is unable to return the assets. This guarantee does not cover losses related to market fluctuations.

Before selecting a bank on Aujourd’hui J’investis, it is worth checking under what guarantee regime the various offered supports fall, especially if one concentrates a significant part of their wealth with a single intermediary.

Brokerage Fees and PEA Transfer Fees: What Affects Profitability

Brokerage fees are the primary comparison criterion displayed by banks. The differences are real: some online brokers charge less than one euro per programmed order on ETFs, while traditional banks apply significantly higher rates, sometimes several dozen euros per transaction.

However, entry fees tell only part of the story. Annual management fees and custody fees, often zero online, persist in most physical networks. Over a long investment horizon, these recurring fees weigh more than one-off brokerage fees.

The Hidden Cost of a Future Transfer

Changing banks for a PEA is not covered by the banking mobility of the current account. The transfer requires a separate process. According to the AMF, in the absence of difficulty, it generally takes place in less than a month, but no maximum legal deadline is set.

The pricing framework sets a cap of 15 euros per listed line, 50 euros per unlisted line, and 150 euros in total (including closure). A portfolio composed of numerous unlisted lines (OPCVM, FCPI) can therefore quickly reach this cap. However, the transfer retains the tax history of the plan, making it often preferable to a closure followed by a reopening.

  • Check the composition of the portfolio (listed vs unlisted lines) before considering a transfer, as fees differ depending on the type of security
  • Ask the receiving bank if it covers all or part of the transfer fees, as some offer this under certain conditions
  • Anticipate a variable timeframe: the absence of a maximum legal deadline leaves uncertainty about the actual duration of the operation

Investment Wrappers: PEA, Life Insurance, and Securities Account According to Profile

Not all banks offer the same range of tax wrappers, and this is often an underestimated selection criterion. An investor focused on European stocks needs a high-performing PEA. A saver looking to diversify into real estate via SCPI or access bond funds will turn to a multi-support life insurance.

The choice of wrapper determines the applicable taxation on capital gains and income. A PEA over five years offers an exemption from income tax on gains. Life insurance, after eight years, benefits from an annual allowance on withdrawals. The ordinary securities account, on the other hand, offers no tax advantage but allows access to a global investment universe without restriction.

Self-Management or Managed Management

Some online banks offer managed management from a few thousand euros, while others reserve it for higher balances. Managed management delegates the decisions to a manager according to a defined risk profile. The additional fees associated with this service vary from one institution to another.

For an autonomous investor who selects their own ETFs or stocks, the quality of the order execution interface and the depth of the accessible securities offer matter more than the existence of a management mandate.

Digital Resilience of Banks: The DORA Regulatory Framework

Since January 2025, the European regulation DORA (Digital Operational Resilience Act) applies to banks and investment firms. This text imposes specific requirements regarding the management of IT risks, resilience testing, and monitoring of third-party technology providers.

For the saver, this aspect does not appear in any fee comparison. However, it directly concerns the continuity of access to accounts and the security of operations. A bank compliant with DORA offers guarantees regarding its ability to maintain its services in the event of a major IT incident.

Purely digital institutions, whose infrastructure relies entirely on cloud providers, are particularly affected by these subcontractor monitoring obligations. This question deserves to be raised when choosing an online broker, even if the answer is not always publicly accessible.

  • Check that the institution is indeed approved by the ACPR or registered with the AMF, two registries that can be consulted online
  • Consult the IT security policy published by the bank, particularly regarding strong authentication and data encryption
  • Prefer an intermediary that communicates about its regulatory compliance, including aspects of operational resilience

The choice of a bank for investment is based on a trade-off between visible fees, taxation of wrappers, ease of transfer, and the robustness of the infrastructure. A PEA opened with a low-cost broker can turn out to be expensive to transfer if the portfolio contains unlisted lines. A life insurance policy taken out with a traditional bank may limit access to certain supports. The protection of the saver, however, depends on the type of assets held, not just the name of the bank.
